PART 2 — THE SECRET MY HUSBAND LEFT BEHIND

Detective Harris stared at me through the narrow opening of my front door.
“Mrs. Carter, your husband reported that you’ve stolen a significant amount of money from him.”
For a moment, I thought I had misheard.
Then I laughed.
Not because it was funny. Because the man who had abandoned me for my best friend in Cancun had somehow found time to accuse me of theft.

“Detective,” I said calmly, “my husband left me last night. With another woman. The only thing I’ve taken from him is access to my credit cards.”
Officer Morales glanced at his partner.
Harris didn’t smile.
“Ma’am, we’re talking about $480,000.”
My laughter stopped.
“Excuse me?”

“Your husband claims that money disappeared from a business account yesterday afternoon. He says you transferred it without authorization.”
I felt something cold settle in my stomach.
Daniel owned a consulting business. For fifteen years, he’d insisted I stay away from its finances.
According to him, I wasn’t qualified to understand complicated business transactions.

But there was one detail he had conveniently forgotten.
I had spent twenty-two years working as a senior accountant.
And I knew exactly what a suspicious transfer looked like.
“Detective, may I show you something?”
I removed the security chain and invited them inside.
At the kitchen table, I opened my laptop and pulled up Daniel’s message.
“I ran away with your best friend. We’re never coming back.”

Harris read it twice.
“When did you receive this?”
“Yesterday evening. And shortly afterward, I discovered thousands of dollars in charges from Cancun.”
“Did you cancel his cards?”
“Yes. They were supplementary cards on accounts registered in my name.”
Harris leaned back.
“Mrs. Carter, your husband told us those cards were connected to his business.”
“Then he’s lying.”
Silence.
I opened another folder.
“Three months ago, I noticed something unusual in our joint tax documents. Daniel had been moving money between accounts I didn’t recognize.”
“Why didn’t you report it?”
“Because when I confronted him, he told me it was perfectly legal.”
I paused.
“And because I trusted my husband.”
For the first time, Detective Harris looked genuinely interested.
“Do you still have those documents?”
“Every single one.”
I retrieved a flash drive from my desk drawer.
Daniel had always teased me about keeping records of everything.
He called it my annoying little obsession.
That morning, it might have been the only thing protecting me.
Harris examined the files on my laptop while Morales took notes.
Then Harris pointed to a transfer.
“Mrs. Carter, do you recognize this account number?”
I leaned forward.
My breath caught.
“That’s my mother’s account.”
Both officers looked at me.
“My mother died four years ago,” I whispered.
Harris’s expression changed immediately.
“Are you certain?”
“Absolutely.”
He turned the screen toward me.
A transfer of $175,000 had been made into her account just six weeks earlier.
And the recipient’s name was listed as Evelyn Carter.
My mother’s full name.
“That’s impossible,” I said.
Harris closed the laptop slowly.
“Mrs. Carter, we have reason to believe your husband may have been using deceased individuals’ identities to move money.”
I stared at him.
“Then why would he accuse me?”
The detective hesitated.
“Because someone has already contacted federal investigators claiming you organized the entire operation.”
My hands went numb.
Daniel hadn’t simply abandoned me.
He had been preparing to destroy me.
But the nightmare wasn’t finished.
Officer Morales’s phone suddenly rang.
He stepped into the hallway to answer it.
Seconds later, he returned looking pale.
“Detective, we have a problem.”
Harris stood.
“What happened?”
Morales looked directly at me.
“The woman traveling with Daniel Carter has been found unconscious in their Cancun hotel room. She’s been taken to the hospital.”
My stomach twisted.
“Rebecca?” I whispered.
Rebecca was my best friend of twenty-eight years.
The woman who had sat beside me at my mother’s funeral.
The woman who had hugged me three days earlier and promised we’d grow old together.
Morales nodded.
“And your husband?”
“Missing.”
Harris immediately reached for his phone.
But before he could make the call, mine vibrated on the table.
An unknown number.
A message appeared.
“Don’t trust the police. Daniel didn’t run away with me. He brought me here because I discovered what he did to your mother. Check the safe behind his office bookshelf. Hurry.”
My blood turned to ice.
The message was from Rebecca.
I read it again, barely breathing.
Then another message arrived.
“And whatever you do, don’t let Detective Harris see what’s inside.”
I slowly lifted my eyes.
Detective Harris was standing directly across from me.
And he was watching my phone.
“Mrs. Carter,” he asked quietly, “who just texted you?”
I turned the screen facedown.
For the first time that morning, I realized something terrifying.
Maybe Daniel wasn’t the only person lying to me.
And maybe the two officers sitting inside my house hadn’t come to protect me at all…..
