PART 2 – My husband had two children with his secretary. Then one doctor’s question erased his smile.

PART 2: THE SECRET THAT DESTROYED HIS PERFECT LIE

Richard stared at the doctor as if he had just spoken a language nobody else in the room understood.
“What exactly is my wife supposed to have told me?” he demanded.
Dr. Harrison adjusted his glasses and glanced at me. “Mr. Sterling, your fertility examination five years ago revealed a permanent medical condition. Your records indicate that your wife received the results after you declined the follow-up appointment.”

Richard laughed nervously. “That was years ago. Obviously, something changed.”
The doctor didn’t smile.
“Mr. Sterling, your condition is irreversible. You are medically incapable of fathering biological children.”
For the first time in nine years of marriage, I watched my husband run out of words.
He looked at me.
Then at the doctor.

Then back at me.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered.
Dr. Harrison turned the computer screen toward him. “Your original specialist documented the findings. This morning’s results confirm the same diagnosis.”
Richard gripped the armrests of his chair.
“No,” he said sharply. “I have two children. A three-year-old son and a six-month-old daughter.”

The doctor remained professional. “I can’t comment on the parentage of those children, Mr. Sterling. I can only explain your medical results.”
Richard slowly turned toward me.
“You knew?”
I folded my hands in my lap.
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Five years.”

His face turned bright red. “And you never thought to tell me?”
I looked directly into his eyes. “I called you eleven times that afternoon, Richard. You didn’t answer. The doctor called you himself. You told him to speak to me because you were busy.”
He opened his mouth, but I continued.
“Then you came home and told me that if we couldn’t have children, it was my failure as a woman. After Chloe became pregnant, you announced to your entire family that you had finally found someone capable of giving you heirs.”
Richard’s breathing grew uneven.
“You should have told me anyway!”
“And you should have listened.”
The room became painfully quiet.
Then Richard grabbed his phone.
He called Chloe.
She answered on the second ring, laughing.
“Baby, I’m at the boutique. Did you remember to transfer the money?”
Richard’s voice sounded almost unrecognizable.
“Whose children are they?”
Silence.
“What?”
“The children, Chloe. Are they mine?”
I watched the color drain from his face as she struggled to answer.
“Richard, what kind of question is that?”
“I just left the doctor. He says I can’t father children.”
Another silence.
Then Chloe whispered something that made Richard stand so abruptly his chair struck the wall.
“Who told you that?”
He froze.
Because she hadn’t said the doctor was wrong.
She had asked who told him.
Richard’s voice dropped dangerously low. “You already knew?”
“Richard, please. Not over the phone.”
He disconnected.
For several seconds, he stood completely still.
Then he turned toward me with an expression I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Real, unmistakable fear.
“Maggie,” he said quietly, “we need to talk.”
I stood and picked up my handbag.
“No, Richard. We needed to talk five years ago.”
He followed me into the hallway.
“Where are you going?”
“To my attorney.”
His footsteps stopped.
“What attorney?”
I turned around.
“The one who helped draft our marriage agreement. Remember the fidelity clause you insisted on including because you were afraid I’d embarrass your family?”
His eyes narrowed.
“What about it?”
I smiled faintly.
“It works both ways.”
Richard stared at me.
“And there’s something else you should understand. Chloe’s apartment, her vacations, the jewelry, and the money you spent supporting those children weren’t paid for entirely with your personal funds.”
His expression changed again.
I continued. “I’ve collected three years of financial records showing company money being used for your private life.”
“You went through my accounts?”
“I’m still a shareholder, Richard. You seem to have forgotten that.”
He stepped closer.
“You wouldn’t dare use that against me.”
I met his eyes.
“You brought another woman and her children to our company gala, humiliated me in front of hundreds of people, and called them your legacy. You should have wondered what I was doing while you celebrated.”
My phone vibrated.
A message from my attorney appeared on the screen.
The documents are ready. The board has received the preliminary financial report. Do not sign anything Richard gives you.
I put the phone away.
Richard noticed my expression.
“What have you done, Maggie?”
“Protected myself.”
He caught my wrist.
“You’re still my wife!”
I looked down at his hand until he released me.
“And that’s exactly why you should have treated me better.”
I walked toward the elevator while he stood in the hallway, desperately calling Chloe again.
But when I reached the parking garage, my own phone rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
“Mrs. Sterling?” a woman’s trembling voice asked.
“Yes?”
“My name is Vanessa Reed. I used to work in your husband’s accounting department.”
I stopped walking.
“I know who you are.”
She took a shaky breath.
“I heard something happened at the clinic. I think there’s something you need to know about Chloe.”
My heart tightened.
“What about her?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Those children aren’t the only secret she’s been keeping.”
I leaned against my car.
“Tell me.”
“Three months ago, I was asked to process a confidential payment to a man named Daniel Mercer. The transaction was disguised as consulting fees.”
I frowned.
“Who is Daniel Mercer?”
Her answer came in a whisper.
“Chloe’s husband.”
For a moment, the entire parking garage seemed to tilt beneath my feet.
“Her what?”
“They never divorced, Mrs. Sterling. They’ve been married for seven years.”
I closed my eyes.
Richard had spent years publicly humiliating me for a woman who was apparently hiding a marriage of her own.
But Vanessa wasn’t finished.
“There’s something worse. I overheard Chloe arguing with Daniel about money. She said Richard would eventually sign everything over to the children, and when that happened, they wouldn’t need him anymore.”
A chill traveled down my spine.
“What exactly are you saying?”
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“I’m saying your husband wasn’t just having an affair. I think he was being used.”
I looked toward the elevator doors.
Richard still hadn’t appeared.
Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.
“Mrs. Sterling, I didn’t call only to warn you about Chloe. I called because Daniel Mercer contacted me yesterday. He wanted to know whether Richard had discovered the medical records.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“How could Daniel know about Richard’s medical condition?”
“I don’t know,” she whispered. “But there’s one more thing.”
“What?”
“He told me that if Richard ever learned the truth, you would be the first person they’d blame.”
Before I could respond, another notification appeared on my phone.
It was a security alert from my home surveillance system.
Front entrance: Motion detected.
I opened the camera.
Chloe stood on my doorstep, holding a thick manila envelope.
Beside her was a man I had never seen before.
He looked directly into the security camera.
Then Chloe pressed the doorbell and said words that made me realize this betrayal was far bigger than I had imagined.
“Maggie, we know you’ve been talking to the attorney. Open the door. We need to discuss what happens to Richard’s company.”
But it was what the man beside her said next that truly frightened me.
“Tell her about the signatures, Chloe. She deserves to know whose name we’ve been using.”
I stared at the screen.
Because the envelope in Chloe’s hands had a familiar handwritten label.
MARGARET STERLING: TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP.
My full legal name.
And underneath it was a date from six months earlier.
A date when I had been three thousand miles away, visiting my dying mother.
Someone had apparently signed my name.
And whatever those documents contained, Chloe and her husband were terrified I was about to discover it….
