PART 4 – My husband’s affair caused pregnancy. His family demanded I leave—one sentence erased their confidence.

PART 4: THE LETTER THAT REVEALED MY HUSBAND’S TRUE PLAN

I sat motionless on the edge of my sofa, holding the phone against my ear. My mother’s words kept repeating in my mind.
“Adrian didn’t meet you by accident.”
For three years, I had believed our relationship was the result of chance. We had met at a charity event, exchanged numbers, and slowly fallen in love. At least, that was what I believed.
“Mom,” I whispered, “please tell me exactly what happened.”
My mother sighed deeply. “Your grandfather knew Lilibeth long before you were born. She worked for his property management company nearly thirty years ago. He trusted her with important documents, financial records, and access to several investment accounts.”

I frowned. “What does that have to do with Adrian?”
“Everything, sweetheart. Your grandfather discovered that money had disappeared from one of his business accounts. After investigating, he found evidence that Lilibeth had falsified several transactions. He dismissed her immediately, but the matter was settled privately because he didn’t want a public scandal.”
My heart began pounding.
“She stole from Grandpa?”
“That’s what he believed, and the financial records supported his concerns. But she always insisted he had promised her the money. She threatened to ruin his reputation if he pursued the matter.”

I closed my eyes.
The same woman who had called me selfish and ordered me out of my own home had apparently spent decades resenting my family.
“Why didn’t Grandpa tell me?”
“Because you were a child, Maria. And after he died, I believed that chapter of our lives was over.”
I swallowed.
“But it wasn’t.”
“No,” my mother answered quietly. “And there’s something else. When you introduced Adrian to me, I recognized his mother’s name immediately. I confronted Lilibeth privately. She claimed the past was behind her and begged me not to interfere with your happiness.”

I felt tears gathering in my eyes.
“Why didn’t you warn me?”
“I tried,” she whispered. “But you were so happy. You thought I was being overprotective whenever I asked questions about Adrian’s finances. I didn’t have proof that he knew anything about the past.”
I remembered those conversations. My mother had gently suggested postponing the wedding. She had encouraged me to keep my personal assets separate. At the time, I thought she simply struggled with the idea of letting me go.
Now I understood why she had insisted the house remain entirely in my name.

“Where’s Grandpa’s letter?” I asked.
“In the safe in my bedroom. Come tomorrow morning. I want you to read it yourself.”
But I couldn’t wait until morning.
An hour later, I was sitting across from my mother at her kitchen table.
She looked smaller than I remembered, her hair streaked with silver, her hands trembling as she pushed an old envelope toward me.
My grandfather’s handwriting was unmistakable.
Across the front were five words.
For Maria, When She Needs Protection.
I carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter dated seven years before my marriage.
My grandfather described how Lilibeth had once attempted to transfer ownership of a small commercial property using forged authorization documents. He had discovered the attempt before the transfer was completed.
But the most disturbing section came near the end.
“Lilibeth believes our family owes her wealth that she never earned. If she ever approaches Maria or attempts to establish a connection through marriage, do not dismiss it as coincidence. Protect the property, protect the inheritance, and most importantly, protect Maria.”
My hands began shaking.
I read those sentences three times.
“Mom,” I whispered, “did Adrian know about this?”
“I don’t know. But I suspect Lilibeth told him enough to make you a target.”
I stared at the letter.
Suddenly, dozens of memories returned.
Adrian asking detailed questions about my grandfather’s estate. Adrian encouraging me to transfer my inheritance into joint accounts. Adrian complaining that married couples shouldn’t keep financial secrets.
And Lilibeth repeatedly suggesting that the house should be registered under her son’s name because he was the “head of the family.”
It hadn’t been ordinary family pressure.
It had been a plan.
The following morning, I brought the letter and every document to Daniel’s office.
He examined the papers carefully before looking at me.
“Maria, your grandfather’s letter gives us important background. But we’ll need independent evidence to establish whether Adrian and Lilibeth deliberately targeted you.”
“I understand,” I replied. “What about the agreement to sell my house?”
“We’ve notified the buyer that ownership and authorization are disputed. The transaction is being challenged. We’re also arranging a forensic review of the signatures and tracing the deposit.”
I nodded slowly.
“There’s something else,” Daniel continued. “The investment company listed on Celeste’s document has a connection to Adrian’s business.”
He turned his computer screen toward me.
There was a company registration record.
The business had been established four years earlier, before Adrian and I married.
Its directors included Adrian and another individual.
Lilibeth.
I leaned forward.
“So they had a business together before our wedding?”
“Yes. But that’s not the strangest part.”
Daniel opened another file.
“That company acquired several debts belonging to your grandfather’s former property business. Some were purchased for a fraction of their original value.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“It suggests they may have been trying to create a financial claim against part of your family’s estate. Whether those debts are enforceable is another question entirely.”
I felt cold.
For years, Adrian had presented himself as a struggling entrepreneur.
But behind my back, he and his mother had been connected to financial arrangements involving my family’s property.
“Daniel, I want everything investigated.”
He nodded.
“Then we should prepare for a difficult confrontation.”
Two days later, Adrian appeared outside my office at the bank.
He looked exhausted. His shirt was wrinkled, and dark circles surrounded his eyes.
“Maria, please. Just give me five minutes.”
I almost walked past him.
But something in his expression made me stop.
“What do you want?”
He looked around nervously.
“My mother lied to me.”
I stared at him.
“That’s your defense?”
“No. Listen to me. She told me your grandfather cheated our family out of money. She said he stole an investment that rightfully belonged to her.”
“And you believed her?”
“She’s my mother.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t explain why you married me.”
Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.
“At first, I only wanted to meet you. She encouraged me to attend that charity event because she knew you’d be there.”
My stomach tightened.
“So our first meeting was arranged.”
He nodded.
“But I fell in love with you, Maria. That part was real.”
I looked at him for a long moment.
“Then why did you cheat on me? Why did you steal my savings? Why did you try to sell my house?”
His lips trembled.
“Because I was drowning in debt. My mother kept telling me we could recover everything once your grandfather’s inheritance was transferred. And when Celeste became pregnant, I panicked.”
I felt something inside me finally break.
“You didn’t panic, Adrian. You made one choice after another, and every choice hurt someone who trusted you.”
He lowered his head.
Then he reached inside his jacket.
“I brought something.”
He handed me a small flash drive.
“What’s this?”
“Copies of my mother’s financial records. Emails, bank transfers, messages between her and the buyer. Everything.”
I stared at the drive.
“Why give this to me now?”
His voice dropped to a whisper.
“Because I discovered she’s planning to blame everything on you.”
My heart began racing.
“What do you mean?”
Adrian glanced toward the parking lot.
“She told the buyer that you personally authorized the transaction. She also prepared documents claiming you borrowed money from our company.”
I gripped the flash drive.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“I know. But she’s already spoken to someone about taking legal action against you.”
I took a step backward.
“And you helped her create those documents?”
He hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“Adrian,” I said quietly, “don’t contact me again. My attorney will handle everything.”
I walked away before he could answer.
That evening, Daniel examined the files from the flash drive.
There were hundreds of emails, spreadsheets, and scanned documents.
Then he found something that made him stop scrolling.
“Maria, look at this.”
It was an email from Lilibeth to Adrian, dated six months before our wedding.
The subject line read: The Marriage Agreement.
My breath caught.
Daniel opened it.
The message described a plan to convince me to transfer my inheritance into a jointly controlled investment account after the wedding.
Then came a sentence that made my stomach twist.
“Once the assets are secured, we won’t need to maintain the marriage longer than necessary.”
I covered my mouth.
They had discussed ending my marriage before it even began.
But there was more.
Attached to the email was a spreadsheet showing the expected value of my grandfather’s estate, including properties I didn’t even know existed.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
“Maria must never discover the land in Riverside County.”
I stared at those words.
“Daniel, what land?”
He looked up slowly.
“According to this file, your grandfather owned a parcel of land that wasn’t included in the inheritance documents you received.”
“How much is it worth?”
Daniel opened a recent property valuation attached to the email.
His expression changed.
“Maria, if this valuation is accurate, we’re talking about nearly eight million dollars.”
I could barely breathe.
Eight million dollars.
My grandfather had left me something I had never known existed, and somehow Adrian’s family knew more about it than I did.
“Who owns it now?” I whispered.
Daniel checked the attached ownership records.
Then he went completely silent.
“Daniel?”
He turned the screen toward me.
The property had been transferred into a trust several years earlier.
And the person listed as the trust’s administrator was someone I knew.
Someone who had been inside my home, listened to my pain, and watched my marriage fall apart without saying a word.
Roberto. My father-in-law.
I stared at the screen in disbelief.
The man who had pretended to know nothing about Lilibeth’s schemes was connected to the largest secret of all.
Then Daniel opened one final attachment.
It was a signed statement bearing Roberto’s name.
And the first sentence made my blood run cold.
“If anything happens to Maria’s mother before the inheritance is released, control of the remaining assets will pass to the designated trustee.”
I slowly looked at Daniel.
“My mother was hospitalized three months ago.”
He nodded grimly.
“And according to these records, someone attempted to activate that provision two days after she was admitted.”
Suddenly, my mother’s unexpected medical emergency didn’t feel like an unrelated tragedy anymore.
But suspicion wasn’t proof, and I knew we needed answers before drawing conclusions.
I grabbed my phone and called her.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
No answer.
Then a message appeared on my screen from an unfamiliar number.
“If you want your mother safe, stop investigating the Riverside property.”
And beneath it was a photograph taken less than an hour earlier.
My mother, standing outside her house.
Someone had been watching her…….
