PART 3 – My fifteen-year-old daughter felt sick for weeks. Then one hospital visit revealed the terrifying reason.

PART 3 — THE GIRL THEY TRIED TO SILENCE

Detective Morris stared at Lauren.
“What do you mean, another girl?”
Lauren glanced toward the room where Hailey was sitting.
“She says Daniel Reeves has a daughter. Her name is Emily. She’s fourteen years old, and Hailey believes she’s in danger.”
My stomach dropped.
I knew Emily.

She had attended Hailey’s birthday parties. She was a quiet girl with long brown hair who always smiled politely and rarely spoke unless someone asked her a question.
But there was something else I remembered.
Three months earlier, Emily had stopped coming to our house.
When I asked Daniel why, he laughed.
“Teenage drama. You know how girls are.”
Now that memory made my skin crawl.

Detective Morris immediately stepped into the hallway and made a phone call.
I could hear him giving instructions.
“Find the girl’s location. Contact child protection. We need someone checking on her immediately.”
Lauren sat beside me.
“Hailey has been very brave,” she whispered. “But she’s frightened that Emily may suffer if she speaks.”

I covered my face.
For weeks, my daughter had carried her own pain.
And even now, she was worrying about someone else.
I walked back into her room.
Hailey looked up.
“Mom, did I do something wrong?”
I shook my head.
“No, sweetheart. You may have helped protect another girl.”
Her eyes filled with tears.

“Emily told me nobody would believe us.”
I sat beside her.
“Why did she think that?”
Hailey hesitated.
Then she whispered something I would never forget.
“Because her dad told her the police were his friends.”
A cold feeling spread through my chest.
“Did Mark say the same thing to you?”
She nodded.
“He said important people always protect each other.”
I gently took her hand.
“Then they were wrong. And we’re going to make sure you both have people who will protect you.”
For the first time, Hailey squeezed my fingers.
An hour later, Detective Morris returned.
His face was serious.
“We located Emily,” he said.
“Is she safe?” I asked immediately.
“She’s with her grandmother now. Our team is arranging a private interview with a specialist.”
I released a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.
But the detective wasn’t finished.
“There’s something else.”
He placed a folder on the table.
“Your husband’s business partner, Daniel Reeves, owns the property mentioned in the documents we recovered.”
“What property?”
“A house approximately forty miles outside the city.”
I remembered Mark talking about a country property.
He said it was where he and Daniel stored business equipment.
Sometimes he disappeared there for entire weekends.
Whenever I asked questions, he accused me of being controlling.
“Have you searched it?” I asked.
“We’re pursuing the appropriate legal authorization. We need to establish exactly what happened there.”
My hands turned cold.
Then my phone rang again.
AMANDA.
I answered immediately.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
Her voice was trembling.
“I’m fine, but someone came to my house.”
I stood up.
“Who?”
“A woman. She said her name was Rebecca. She claimed she knew Mark and had something important to give you.”
My heart pounded.
“What did she want?”
“She left an envelope under my door.”
I glanced at Detective Morris.
“Don’t open it,” he said quietly.
I repeated his instructions to Amanda and asked her to remain inside until an officer arrived.
Thirty minutes later, Detective Morris received photographs of the envelope’s contents after investigators had examined them.
Inside were copies of several financial records.
And one photograph.
When the detective showed it to me, I recognized the woman immediately.
She was standing beside Mark and Daniel at a charity dinner.
Her name was Rebecca Shaw.
She had worked as Mark’s accountant for almost six years.
But the photograph wasn’t what frightened me.
It was the handwritten message on the back.
“I tried to warn someone before. They made sure nobody listened.”
I looked at Detective Morris.
“What does that mean?”
“We’re contacting Ms. Shaw to find out.”
I stared at Mark’s smiling face in the photograph.
For fifteen years, I believed I knew the man beside me.
Now every memory felt like a locked door.
And behind each door was another secret.
That evening, Hailey finally managed to eat a little soup.
I sat beside her while Amanda arranged pillows on the small sofa in our temporary accommodation.
For a few minutes, everything felt almost peaceful.
Then Hailey asked a question that broke my heart.
“Mom, will I ever feel normal again?”
I put down my spoon.
“You won’t always feel the way you do right now,” I told her. “We’ll find people who can help you heal. And I’ll be beside you.”
She looked at her stomach.
“What about the baby?”
I moved closer.
“We don’t have to decide everything tonight. The doctors will explain your options, and you’ll have support. We’ll listen to what you want and what you need.”
She began crying softly.
“I just want to be fifteen again.”
I pulled her into my arms.
And we stayed that way for a long time.
The following morning, Detective Morris called.
“We’ve spoken with Rebecca Shaw,” he said.
My heart began racing.
“And?”
“She says she discovered suspicious payments connected to Daniel’s property. When she questioned them, Mark threatened her employment.”
I stared at the wall.
“Why didn’t she tell the police?”
“She says she was frightened. We’re reviewing what she provided and checking her account.”
Then his voice changed.
“Mrs. Carter, Rebecca also gave us a name.”
“What name?”
“A former employee who left your husband’s company suddenly last year.”
I frowned.
“Who?”
“Thomas Bennett.”
The name sounded familiar.
Thomas had worked for Mark for nearly a decade.
One day, Mark announced that Thomas had stolen money and disappeared.
He said nobody should ever speak to him again.
I remembered thinking it was strange because Thomas had always seemed honest.
“What does Thomas have to do with this?”
“Rebecca says he discovered something before he left. We’re trying to contact him.”
I looked toward Hailey’s bedroom.
“How many people knew something was wrong?”
The detective didn’t answer.
And perhaps that silence was answer enough.
Later that afternoon, investigators informed me that Mark had been taken into custody in connection with the allegations involving Hailey. Daniel was also being questioned as the investigation expanded.
I sat down and cried.
Not because I missed my husband.
But because Hailey could finally sleep without listening for his footsteps.
That night, Amanda brought us dinner.
Hailey joined us at the table.
She even smiled faintly when Amanda accidentally dropped a bread roll onto the floor.
It was the smallest smile.
But it meant everything.
Then, shortly after nine, Detective Morris called again.
“We’ve located Thomas Bennett.”
Something in his tone made me straighten.
“Did he tell you what happened?”
“He’s agreed to provide a statement. But he says he has something more important than financial records.”
“What?”
“A storage drive containing files he copied before leaving the company.”
I felt my heart hammering.
“What kind of files?”
“We’re examining them now. Thomas believes they could establish a timeline and identify other people who may have information about the case.”
I looked at Hailey.
She was sitting beside Amanda, watching an old cartoon.
For the first time in weeks, she looked almost comfortable.
I turned away so she wouldn’t hear.
“Detective, please tell me this is finally coming to an end.”
He was quiet for a moment.
Then he said, “I hope so. But there’s one thing you need to know.”
My chest tightened.
“What?”
“Thomas says he tried to contact you personally last year.”
I frowned.
“No. I’ve never spoken to him since he left.”
“According to him, he sent you a letter explaining why he was frightened.”
I shook my head.
“I never received any letter.”
“He says someone at your house signed for it.”
My fingers went numb.
“Who?”
Detective Morris took a breath.
“Your husband.”
I closed my eyes.
Mark had intercepted the warning.
He had kept me from knowing.
But then the detective said something even more disturbing.
“Thomas claims the letter wasn’t his first attempt to warn your family.”
I whispered, “What do you mean?”
“He says he spoke to another person in your household before he left.”
I stared through the doorway at my daughter.
“Who?”
The detective’s next words made my blood run cold.
“Your daughter, Hailey. He says she knew something about Daniel’s property long before the pregnancy.”
I stood completely still.
Because at that exact moment, Hailey appeared in the doorway.
She had heard the conversation.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
And before I could ask anything, she whispered:
“Mom, there’s something I haven’t told the police yet. Something Dad made me promise never to tell anyone.”…….
