PART 2: THE HOUSE THEY NEVER KNEW WAS MINE
“Before any of you decide when I should leave, there’s something you need to understand,” I said calmly. “This house doesn’t belong to Adrian. It never did. My mother gave it to me before our wedding, and every legal document carries my name alone. So if anyone is leaving today, it won’t be me.”
For several seconds, nobody moved. The silence was so complete that I could hear the clock ticking above the fireplace. Adrian’s confident expression disappeared. My mother-in-law, Lilibeth, looked at her son as though she expected him to contradict me. But Adrian simply stared at the floor.
“That’s impossible,” Lilibeth finally snapped. “Adrian told us this house was purchased after the wedding. He said you both owned it.”
I turned toward my husband. “Did you also tell them you paid the mortgage? Because there isn’t one. My mother paid for this house entirely.”
His sister, Vanessa, shifted uncomfortably. The pregnant woman, whom I had recently learned was named Celeste, slowly removed her hand from her stomach and looked at Adrian.
“You told me this was your house,” she whispered.
Adrian rubbed his forehead. “Maria, can we discuss this privately?”
I almost laughed. “Privately? You brought six people into my living room to humiliate me. Now that the truth is uncomfortable, suddenly you want privacy?”
My father-in-law, Roberto, cleared his throat. “Maria, perhaps everyone has been emotional. We can find a reasonable arrangement.”
“An arrangement?” I repeated. “Your son betrayed our marriage, brought his pregnant mistress into my home, and your family demanded that I disappear. What exactly would you like me to arrange?”
Lilibeth’s expression hardened. “Don’t forget that Adrian is still your husband. You can’t just throw him out.”
“You’re right about one thing,” I replied. “He’s still legally my husband. That’s why I consulted an attorney before this meeting.”
Adrian’s head snapped up.
I reached into the drawer beside my chair and placed a blue folder on the coffee table.
Inside were copies of the property deed, the documents establishing my mother’s gift, and a letter from my attorney outlining the next steps toward divorce.
“I knew about Celeste three weeks before Adrian confessed,” I explained. “I found messages on our shared tablet. I didn’t confront him because I needed time to understand what else he’d been hiding.”
Adrian’s face turned pale. “You went through my private messages?”
“Interesting,” I said quietly. “You seem more offended by my discovering your affair than by the affair itself.”
Vanessa opened her mouth but quickly closed it.
I continued, “Last month, Adrian asked me to sign some paperwork supposedly needed for his business. He said it was a routine financial matter. Fortunately, I was too busy to sign anything without reviewing it.”
Roberto leaned forward. “What paperwork?”
I pulled another document from the folder.
“It was an application for a substantial business loan. Adrian had listed this property as proposed collateral.”
Lilibeth looked genuinely confused. “What’s wrong with that? He’s your husband.”
“What’s wrong,” I answered, “is that he doesn’t own this property, and I never agreed to risk my mother’s lifetime savings for his business.”
Adrian stood abruptly. “I was going to explain everything!”
“When?” I asked. “Before or after you moved your girlfriend into my bedroom?”
Celeste turned toward him sharply. “You said the loan was already approved. You told me we would have money for the baby and that Maria had agreed to the separation.”
Adrian said nothing.
For the first time, I saw uncertainty replace the confidence on Celeste’s face.
Then she asked a question that changed the atmosphere completely.
“Adrian, where did the money for my apartment come from?”
He froze.
I slowly looked from Celeste to my husband.
“What apartment?”
Nobody answered.
Celeste swallowed hard. “He rented me a two-bedroom apartment three months ago. He said it was paid for through his business account.”
I felt something cold settle in my stomach.
For nearly a year, Adrian had repeatedly complained that his business was struggling. I had transferred money from my personal savings to help him cover expenses. Each time, he promised repayment. Each time, I believed him.
“How much are you paying for that apartment?” I asked.
Celeste hesitated. “Three thousand dollars a month.”
My hands tightened around the folder.
Three thousand dollars. Almost exactly the amount Adrian had asked me to transfer each month for what he called emergency business expenses.
I turned to him.
“Tell me that isn’t my money.”
“Maria, please,” he whispered.
“Tell me.”
He looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
My mother-in-law suddenly reached for my hand. “Maria, sweetheart, perhaps we were too harsh earlier. You’ve always been part of this family. We should talk calmly and forgive each other.”
I pulled my hand away.
“Twenty minutes ago, you told me to surrender my marriage, my dignity, and my home. Now that you’ve discovered your son has nothing to offer, I’m suddenly family again?”
Her cheeks flushed.
I stood and walked toward the front door.
“This meeting is over. Everyone who doesn’t live here needs to leave.”
Roberto rose immediately. Vanessa followed, avoiding my eyes. Lilibeth began protesting, but one look from her husband silenced her.
Celeste remained seated.
She stared at Adrian with an expression I recognized all too well. It was the look of a woman realizing that the man she trusted had constructed an entire relationship out of lies.
Finally, she stood.
“I’m leaving too,” she said.
Adrian reached for her arm. “Celeste, don’t do this.”
She pulled away. “You told me Maria was selfish, that she cared only about money. You never mentioned she was the one supporting you.”
As everyone moved toward the door, Adrian turned back to me.
“You’ve destroyed everything,” he said bitterly.
I looked directly into his eyes.
“No, Adrian. I simply stopped paying for the life you built behind my back.”
He opened his mouth, but before he could answer, my phone rang.
It was my attorney, Daniel.
I stepped into the kitchen and answered.
“Maria,” he said urgently, “I’ve just finished reviewing the financial documents you sent me. There’s something you need to see immediately.”
My heart began pounding.
“What did you find?”
He hesitated.
“The loan application wasn’t the only document Adrian submitted. There’s a second set of papers bearing what appears to be your signature.”
I gripped the kitchen counter.
“I never signed anything.”
“I believe you,” Daniel replied. “But according to the records, someone used those documents to initiate a transaction involving your property.”
For a moment, the room seemed to tilt.
“Daniel, are you saying Adrian tried to sell my house?”
His answer made my blood run cold.
“Maria, this is much worse than an attempted sale. There’s already a signed agreement, and the buyer has transferred a large deposit.”
I looked through the kitchen doorway.
Adrian was standing near the entrance, watching me with a strange expression.
Not confusion.
Not anger.
Fear.
And suddenly I understood something terrifying.
Adrian hadn’t brought his family here merely to force me out. He had needed me gone before I discovered what he’d already done.
But what neither Adrian nor his family knew was that my attorney had uncovered one more name on those documents.
And when Daniel told me whose name it was, I realized my husband’s betrayal was only the beginning………
