PART 3 – A terrified girl called 911 about her father. Minutes later, police discovered a horrifying scene.

PART 3 — THE MAN BEHIND THE RED BOX

“Daniel.”
Sarah barely breathed the name.
Jessica turned sharply toward the end of the driveway, but the man beneath the black umbrella was already disappearing into the rain.
“Marcus!” she shouted.
Marcus ran toward the sidewalk while another officer hurried around the opposite side of the property.

By the time they reached the street, the stranger was gone.
A black SUV pulled away from the corner without headlights.
Marcus immediately reached for his radio.
“Possible suspect vehicle heading east. Black SUV, unknown plate. Stop it if you see it.”
Jessica climbed into the ambulance beside Sarah.

“Listen to me,” she said. “Who is Daniel Mercer?”
Sarah’s frightened eyes moved toward the open ambulance doors.
“My husband’s boss.”
Jessica frowned.
“David worked at a warehouse.”
Sarah shook her head.
“That was what everyone thought.”

The paramedic paused while checking Sarah’s blood pressure.
Jessica leaned closer.
“What did David really do?”
Sarah hesitated.
Then she whispered, “He worked for Daniel.”
The ambulance doors closed.
As they pulled away from the house, Sarah finally began telling the story she had kept buried for almost a year.

After losing his warehouse job, David had become desperate for money.
One evening, an old acquaintance introduced him to Daniel Mercer.
Daniel owned Mercer Protection Services, a respected security company that provided guards, transportation, and private protection for wealthy clients throughout Oregon.
At least, that was the public business.
According to Sarah, David had discovered there was another side.
“At first, he only drove packages,” she explained.
“What kind of packages?” Jessica asked.
“I didn’t know.”
“Did David?”
“Eventually.”
Sarah looked toward the rain sliding down the ambulance window.
“He started coming home with cash.”
Large amounts.
Far more than someone doing occasional driving work should have been making.
Sarah became suspicious.
She found envelopes hidden inside the garage.
Then she found burner phones.
Then photographs.
And finally, the notebook.
“The one we found tonight?” Jessica asked.
Sarah nodded.
“I copied some pages.”
Jessica’s expression changed.
“Where are the copies?”
Sarah swallowed.
“Somewhere David doesn’t know about.”
The ambulance suddenly slowed.
Jessica looked toward the front.
“What happened?”
The driver called back.
“Car stopped ahead.”
Jessica immediately became alert.
Through the windshield, she could see a dark SUV sitting sideways across the road.
Her stomach dropped.
“Back up.”
“What?”
“Back up now!”
Before the driver could react, the SUV’s doors opened.
Two men stepped out.
Both wore dark jackets.
One moved toward the ambulance.
Jessica pulled her radio.
“Officer needs assistance! Ambulance intercepted on—”
The radio exploded with static.
No signal.
The driver slammed the ambulance into reverse.
The SUV surged forward.
The ambulance swerved violently.
Sarah screamed as equipment crashed against the interior walls.
Then another set of headlights appeared behind them.
Jessica looked through the rear window.
A patrol cruiser.
Marcus.
The cruiser accelerated toward the SUV.
The two men abandoned their approach and ran back to their vehicle.
Seconds later, the SUV shot through an intersection and disappeared into the storm.
Marcus followed only long enough to get part of the license plate before returning to the ambulance.
When he opened the rear door, Jessica looked furious.
“That wasn’t random.”
Sarah was trembling uncontrollably.
“They know I’m alive.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?”
“Daniel.”
By the time they reached the hospital, police had already surrounded the emergency entrance.
Sarah was placed under guard.
David and Vince were taken separately to the station.
Chloe and Noah were brought to the hospital with a child services advocate, but Jessica made sure Sarah was allowed to see them before questioning continued.
When Chloe entered the hospital room, she ran directly toward her mother.
Sarah hugged both children tightly.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Chloe whispered, “Mom, was the man outside the house the man Dad was scared of?”
Sarah slowly looked at her.
“What man?”
“The tall one.”
Jessica stepped closer.
“You’ve seen Daniel before?”
Chloe nodded.
“He came to our house a lot.”
Sarah looked stunned.
“When?”
“When you were working.”
Jessica crouched beside Chloe.
“What did he do?”
“He went in the garage with Dad.”
“Did they ever say anything you remember?”
Chloe thought carefully.
Then her face changed.
“Once Dad said, ‘I won’t move them again.’”
Jessica exchanged a glance with Marcus.
“Move what?”
Chloe shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“And Daniel?”
“He said, ‘Then your family becomes my problem.’”
Sarah’s hand flew to her mouth.
Suddenly, the broken porch light, the black duffel bag, and Daniel appearing outside the house no longer looked like separate pieces.
Marcus stepped into the hallway and immediately contacted detectives.
Less than an hour later, the investigation changed completely.
The partial license plate from the SUV led police to a vehicle registered to Mercer Protection Services.
And when detectives searched the address written on the back of the garage photograph, they discovered an abandoned industrial property on the outskirts of Portland.
Inside were empty storage crates.
Burned documents.
Three computers with their hard drives removed.
And something far more disturbing.
A wall covered in photographs.
Business owners.
Former employees.
Government contractors.
Private citizens.
Dozens of people.
Some photographs had red circles around them.
Others had dates.
One photograph showed Sarah.
Another showed David.
And beside Sarah’s picture were two handwritten words:
“HAS COPY.”
When Jessica received the photograph from the crime scene, she immediately returned to Sarah’s hospital room.
“Sarah, we need those copied pages.”
Sarah’s face went pale.
“I can’t tell you where they are yet.”
Jessica stared at her.
“Someone just tried to stop your ambulance.”
“I know.”
“Then why protect them?”
“Because the copies aren’t here.”
“Where are they?”
Sarah looked toward Chloe.
“My daughter knows.”
Everyone in the room became silent.
Chloe looked confused.
Sarah took her hand.
“Remember the blue music box Grandma gave you?”
Chloe nodded.
“I told you never to let anyone open the bottom compartment.”
Chloe’s eyes widened.
Jessica understood immediately.
“You hid the documents in your daughter’s room?”
“Not anymore,” Sarah said.
Jessica frowned.
“Then where?”
Sarah took a slow breath.
“Three weeks ago, Chloe brought the music box to school for show-and-tell.”
Chloe suddenly covered her mouth.
“I left it there.”
Sarah nodded.
“And I never brought it home because I realized David had started searching the bedrooms.”
Jessica stood.
“What school?”
“Rosewood Elementary.”
Marcus was already reaching for his keys.
It was almost 2:30 in the morning when Jessica and Marcus arrived at the dark elementary school with two additional officers.
The principal met them at a side entrance after receiving an emergency call from police.
“You’re looking for a music box?”
“Yes.”
The principal led them toward Chloe’s classroom.
Rows of tiny desks sat in darkness beneath colorful posters.
The teacher had stored show-and-tell items inside a locked cabinet.
They found the blue music box near the back.
Jessica placed it carefully on a desk.
There was a small hidden panel underneath.
Inside were several folded sheets of paper.
Photocopies from David’s notebook.
Names.
Dates.
Bank transfers.
Vehicle registrations.
And addresses.
Marcus moved through the pages slowly.
“This is enough to open a much bigger investigation.”
Jessica continued reading.
Then she stopped.
“Marcus.”
“What?”
She pointed toward one entry.
September 20.
Tonight’s date.
Beside the date was written:
MILLER HOUSE — RECOVER FILES.
Below it was another address.
Jessica recognized it instantly.
Rosewood Elementary School.
Her blood turned cold.
“They know the copies are here.”
At that exact moment, every light in the school went out.
The hallway became completely black.
The principal gasped.
Marcus drew his weapon.
“Everyone down.”
A heavy metallic sound echoed from somewhere near the rear entrance.
Someone had entered the building.
Jessica grabbed the documents and pushed them inside her jacket.
Footsteps moved through the corridor.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Getting closer.
Marcus motioned for the principal to hide behind the teacher’s desk.
Jessica moved beside the classroom door.
The footsteps stopped outside.
For several seconds, there was absolute silence.
Then a man’s voice came through the darkness.
“Officer Hayes.”
Jessica froze.
The voice continued.
“You have something that belongs to Mr. Mercer.”
Marcus raised his weapon toward the doorway.
Jessica said nothing.
The man laughed quietly.
“You really think this is about one frightened family?”
Another sound came from the opposite hallway.
A second person.
They were surrounded.
Jessica whispered into her radio.
No response.
The power outage had apparently disabled part of the building’s communication system.
Then the classroom door began to open.
Marcus shouted, “Police! Show me your hands!”
The door slammed shut again.
A gunshot exploded from the hallway.
Glass shattered.
The principal screamed.
Jessica pulled her behind a cabinet.
More footsteps rushed away.
“Stay here!” Marcus ordered.
He and Jessica moved into the corridor.
Emergency lights suddenly flickered on.
At the far end of the hall, a masked man disappeared around the corner.
Marcus ran after him.
Jessica moved the opposite direction.
She reached the rear exit just as another man pushed through the doors.
Jessica tackled him onto the wet pavement.
He fought desperately.
She managed to pull off his mask.
And stopped.
She knew him.
Everyone at the station knew him.
“Captain?”
The man beneath her was Captain Raymond Holt.
Her own commanding officer.
For fifteen years, Holt had been one of the most respected officers in the department.
He had trained Jessica.
He had recommended Marcus for promotion.
He had personally praised officers for integrity and service.
Now he stared up at her from the pavement with pure hatred.
“You have no idea what you’ve stepped into,” he said.
Jessica tightened the handcuffs around his wrists.
“Then explain it.”
Holt gave a cold smile.
“You think Mercer is the top of this?”
Jessica felt a chill crawl across her skin.
Holt leaned closer.
“He’s not.”
Behind them, Marcus emerged from the darkness.
The second intruder had escaped.
But what they had captured was worse.
A police captain connected to Daniel Mercer.
Jessica looked at the papers hidden inside her jacket.
The case was no longer about domestic violence.
It wasn’t even about one corrupt businessman.
Someone had built an operation that reached into businesses, private security, and now the police department itself.
And back at the hospital, Sarah had just received a text message from an unknown number.
She stared at the screen with shaking hands.
There were only seven words:
“Your daughter saved you once. Not twice.”
Then another message appeared.
This one contained a photograph.
Chloe and Noah.
Taken inside the hospital less than five minutes earlier.
Someone was already inside the building………
